Statement on Restoring Public Trust
Regarding Recent Government Decisions on Ukraine, Temporary Foreign Workers and the Gordie Howe Bridge

Millions of Canadians today feel politically homeless, and the events dominating the news over the last 10 days have made it increasingly apparent why.
They’ve watched another major aid package announced for Ukraine, continued debate over temporary foreign workers, and now the Gordie Howe Bridge agreement. Each issue has triggered another round of partisan combat.
The government and its institutions, including the opposition, do not demonstrate that Canadians are the first priority.
The government asks Canadians to support decisions that are perceived as putting others ahead of them, while the opposition increasingly frames every government decision as a loss for Canada, a disaster, or an existential threat. The result has been a growing erosion of public trust.
A United Canadian Centrist government would govern differently.
It is unacceptable to ask Canadians to support another foreign aid package, another international commitment, or any agreement that could reasonably be perceived as putting others ahead of Canadians before first demonstrating through action that Canadians are already first in line.
That means, before expanding temporary foreign worker programs, a United Canadian Centrist government would demonstrate that it has made every reasonable effort to connect the people who are already here with available job opportunities before looking elsewhere.
It means that before announcing another billion-dollar commitment overseas, it would first establish the backdrop by delivering tangible improvements in affordability, housing, jobs, and the cost of living so Canadians can see and feel that their government is fighting just as hard for them here at home.
That’s how the Canadian government will regain the trust of its citizens. Not through explanations after the fact, but through tangible results Canadians can see and feel before any announcement is ever made.
